The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) grant program is an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) initiative designed to support free tax preparation service for the underserved through various partner organizations.

Catholic Charities Archdiocese of DC is a partner organization that oversees a VITA organization in the DC Metro area, servicing DC and parts of MD and VA.

Individuals and families making <$58,000 are eligible for VITA services.

Absolutely not.  We serve anyone who earns less than $58,000 and would like to get their taxes prepared for FREE.

The IRS uses your tax return to determine everything from where to send the stimulus check based on the address and bank account number in your latest tax return, to how much to include in the stimulus check based on information like the number of dependents you have and how your income might have changed due to the pandemic or other reasons.

The process involves three easy steps: 1. You complete and email us an intake sheet and include copies of your tax documents 2. We communicate via Zoom or phone to discuss any questions 3. We e-file your return and the IRS e-deposits your tax refund.

According to CAAB, it is common to see individuals being charged $500-900 to prepare tax return.

Unscrupulous tax preparers will sometimes falsely claim individuals as dependents to generate greater tax refunds – which can lead to you getting audited. Even worse, it is not uncommon for some tax preparers to insert their bank account information in order to steal your tax refund.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EIC or EITC) is a refundable tax credit for low- and moderate-income workers. For 2021, the earned income tax credit ranges from $1,502 to $6,728. The amount depends on income and number of children. People without kids can qualify.

The IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $58,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

Yes! Choose a date and time that works for your schedule. No need to commute to a tax preparer site. Use Zoom or your smart phone to communicate. We e-file for you and the IRS e-deposits your refund. Our volunteer tax return preparers must receive 8 hours of tax law training by the law school of the Catholic University of America and then pass a difficult certification exam by the IRS before working on their first tax return at CCVITA.  Every tax return CCVITA prepares is reviewed by a second person who is a tax lawyer or CPA with in many cases decades of tax experience.  CCVITA holds itself to a high standard for quality.

Filing your tax returns early is the best way to avoid identity theft. CC VITA’s rapid and efficient turnaround of your tax returns helps mitigate your risk.

CCVITA will begin work on tax returns on February 5, 2022 and work on tax returns through April 15, 2021.  You can get started now by registering today.
